Video: Mixing a metal song from start to finish

As we prepare for the studio to open in the coming weeks, we’re ramping up by doing some remote mixing sessions. We thought it would be cool to show off our capabilities with a new video series, where Dave takes a user-submitted song and mixes it from top to bottom.

For the very first episode, Rhode Island’s Neighborkid, (who remind us of bands like Every Time I Die) submitted their track “Charlie” to be run through the gauntlet. Dave starts from basic DI guitars, bass and MIDI drums and ends with a complete mix. He selects tones for each instrument, explains MIDI routing, timing and velocity for drums, and shows how to get vocals to sit nicely in a chaotic mix.

This was originally streamed live on YouTube, and we plan on doing plenty more in the future! Check out the whole thing above, and email dave@veryfriendlymusic.com if you want your track to get the same treatment.
